Nosedive is an episode from the British series Black Mirror and is part of season 3. This episode reflects an aspect of social media, and in some ways, makes social media come to life by showing how it would be in real day to day life.
The episode is set in a world where people can rate each other from one to five stars for every interaction they have, which can impact their socioeconomic status. Lacie, the main character, is ready to do whatever it takes to elevate her ratings, when her popular childhood friend contacts her to be her maid of honor for there wedding. Her obsession leads to several mishaps on her journey to the wedding that culminate in a rapide reduction in her ratings.
The first thing that comes to mind while watching this episode, is how crazy and ridiculous it might seem, having this rating system based on everything you do, say, or even the people that you talk and engage with. However, what this episode is showing, is how social media really is and this is how it would be in real life. Nosedive isn’t only showing us a futur dehumanization social media could bring us, but also the current invasion we are undergoing because of it. It is also showing a perfect world where everything seems to be happy and joyful, however, in the same way as social media is hiding the bitter face of the world.
Black Mirror is yet again, showing us the dark side of our world, putting us in front of a reality that we are aware of but still seem to ignore.
